Let me start by saying that there is no law that says the kid's décor you use in a girl's room has to be pink and frilly. Truth is most girls want to express more of their natural selves in the décor in their rooms. If your daughter plays sports let her decorate with a sports theme it can be sporty and yet still be feminine. If she is into playing an instrument then by all means put scales on the walls.
A painted garden trellis is an imaginative way to store and organize a young girl's handbag collection. Fancy drawer pulls can be used to decorate the wooden pegs of the trellis. Sand, prime and paint the trellis in the color (or colors) of your choice, then screw it to the wall at child's height.
Sheets are another multi-tasking tool that works wonders in a child's room. Of course, you can put them on the bed, but there are a number of creative uses for sheets that have nothing to do with sleeping. They make great curtains - just cut the side edges along the top or bottom hem and slip them on a curtain rod. Sewn together, two sheets can make a super easy duvet cover. Cut them up, and they become table covers for night stands or banners for the walls. Sheets can be used to make a pile of decorative pillows to brighten up the bed. Use your imagination, and let the kids get involved. You may be surprised at the fun and ingenuity.
